M.G. Car Production Halted

News very hot off the press (2 hrs ago) is that MG sports car production has been halted at the Longbridge plant near Birmingham.
This very bad news came in a statement saying there would be no further production “until the spring”.
The Chinese parent company of MG said they could not deny that there would be no redundancies.
Big question now is, will the plant ever reopen?

Live report: Frankfurt Motor Show

A big stand for Kia, who are on a bit of a roll at the moment. Centrepiece was the impressive new Sorento on which we've already reported in detail. The new small Venga was also on show – it should be a powerful new weapon in Kia's arsenal (sorry – it's been a long day).

BMW shows its Vision at Frankfurt

BMW's latest concept car, The Vision EfficientDynamics, will be seen in the metal for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The complaint that the motor manufacturers show dramatic concept cars and then disappoint with watered-down production models is probably as old as the industry itself but here the gap between BMW's low-slung slinky Vision EfficientDynamics and its recent production cars such as the lumpy X6 and Gran Turismo, is especially marked.

Renault to unveil new all-electric runabouts

The French car-maker Renault will try to jump the lights on its rivals tomorrow by announcing plans for a commercially viable, non-polluting "car of the future".

Renault and its Japanese subsidiary, Nissan, will reveal details of a range of all-electric cars capable of matching the price and performance of internal-combustion vehicles within two years.

Motoring: Porsche Panamera

There are certain visual tricks that make a Porsche look like a Porsche. Dr Michael Steiner, director of the new Porsche Panamera "product line", is reminding me what they are. "A classic Porsche has a rear engine," he is saying, "so the bonnet is low with the wings higher on either side. The bonnet is narrower at the front. There are no sharp edges and no upper radiator opening, just a single lower intake. At the back, there are wide shoulders and the rear window tapers."

McLaren shows off new super-car

McLaren has revealed its long-awaited, technology-packed new road car, the MP4-12C. Several of its technical features draw upon McLaren's experience in motor racing. The most notable of these is probably the extensive use of carbon fibre, which makes for an exceptionally strong and stiff body structure.

Chinese Cars To Rule The World?

The headlong rush into electric driven cars has recently been given another push with the news that the UK government has promised up to £5000 to buyers who purchase a new electric car, starting in 2011.

Sounds ok on the surface but who is going to make all these new electric cars available and then at an affordable price?

Step forward BYD and step forward Warren Buffet.

A New Rail Revolution?

Am I the first to suspect that there may be a new transport revolution about to take place?

Recent reports of an 11% increase in rail fares. Daily news of cheaper matchbox seized electric cars on the road. UK roads still in a bad state of repair.

Well then, how does this grab you? Politicians make all the (foreign) electric cars available so that we, the public, take to the roads and jam them up while they and their civil servants are the only ones who can afford to travel, courtesy of expense accounts paid by us, by train.

Not such a silly thought is it?

Sources at Vauxhall have confirmed that the company will launch a convertible version of the new Astra
It was also confirmed that the new drop-top will have a fabric roof, unlike the current Astra Twintop, which has a standard design three-piece folding metal roof.
The fabric roof should make the next Astra drop-top lighter and cheaper to produce.
