What’s The Future For – Parking?

We’ve all had our eyes on the car-makers trying to produce the most modern, green, economical, cost efficient, etc, etc, car; but the unasked question hanging over all that is, where do we park all these cars?
Since 1990 there are now 10,000,000 more cars on British roads, no wonder the “spot the tarmac” game is so popular.
Car maker Nissan and website Designboom recently launched a competition asking for solutions to parking problems, among the answers sent in and thought worthy of further consideration were:
1) Competition winner Tamzin Hasan Salim from Bangledash’s entry was .a mechanical arm to raise cars separately and rotate them 360 degrees above ground.
2) Floated in a giant helium balloon above ground.
3) Parking inside a wall which displays a photo as a reminder of where your car is stored.
Perhaps as a half way house so to speak, to provide more efficient parking would be to have current multi storey car parks updated to the standard of the Westfield site in west London which has intelligent software to state how many spaces are available and with directional lighting to guide you to the correct slot.
Who is to blame for this mess, drivers for wanting to use their vehicles or planners for not being aware of public trends?
